US Military Conducts Deadly Strike in Eastern Pacific, Leading to 4 Fatalities
As stated by a high-ranking military official, the US armed forces carried out a fatal strike on a boat in the eastern Pacific, killing four people.
“A US joint task force carried out a lethal kinetic strike on a craft linked to a terrorist group in open sea. Surveillance confirmed the vessel was traveling along a known narco-trafficking route and was involved in narco-trafficking operations. A total of four male narco-terrorists were eliminated, and no US military forces were injured.”
Context and Recent Strikes
The statement follows a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on social media, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund narcotics smuggling and other crimes, vowing to escalate the military presence.
Only on Tuesday, the Pentagon stated it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 strikes have killed at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Defends Actions Amid Scrutiny
The government has faced increasing demands to make public video of a September 2nd vessel attack. However, the defense secretary have refused to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a success, arguing it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of legal military action.
Although the administration has said the operation is about stopping drugs destined for the US, comments from a senior aide appeared to suggest a broader geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the chief of staff said the leader “aims to keep on destroying vessels until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”
This indicates the series of strikes may be linked to a push to oust Venezuela's current government.
