The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Camara: Starting from Dreams to Tournament Favorites.
As I enter the space, the young midfielder picks up a football he won’t let go of throughout our chat. This serves as a powerful symbol for a dream he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” states the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His resolve and natural ability won over clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the most difficult person to convince was not a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He didn’t want me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.
Overcoming Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his career in the game. Another challenge was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.
However, the famed academy – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the training centre. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.
A Landmark Season and Continental Breakthrough
That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his country to the title and earning player of the tournament.
A month later, he was unveiled as FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a choice his family encourage to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and superb playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, after being shown red at the start of his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.
Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions
With his current club, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.
Currently, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. He is often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the senior top prize in the future.
“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”
Moving forward, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the game.
