A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, which kicks off on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.
A Landmark Comeback to the Australian Courts
Tournament officials confirmed on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old legend will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the second round before bowing out in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.
Preparing for the Australian Summer
Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, two weeks before the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a following week, just before the start of play at Melbourne Park.
Her last appearance in the city was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.
"I am thrilled to return in the country and eagerly anticipating playing during the summer season," Venus stated. "I’ve had so many incredible memories there, and I’m thankful for the chance to return to a place that has meant so much to my career."
