The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will End... For Now.

The creative mastermind could not have predicted that Pluribus would become a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

As the debut season of the acclaimed series wrapping up—and the next chapter officially in the works—the creative team opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.

On the Overwhelming Viewer Reception

Anyone might to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to avoid both.

“It feels like constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”

Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We don't try to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by online forums.”

“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.

The Big Question: Has the showrunner See the Ending of Pluribus?

So if the creative staff are not listening by audience theories, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… sort of.

“We've developed some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” he states. “but we are always ready to abandon a good idea for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Then again, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.

“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Then again, why mess with the classics?

“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
