Hailing from Trowbridge in 1931, he became known as a beloved figure who popularised classical music for a vast audience.
He was the BBC’s head of music and arts during the 1960s and 1970s, winning awards for productions such as The Golden Ring.
1978 saw him pioneer the Young Musician of the Year, a competition instrumental in discovering future stars including violinist Nicola Benedetti.
