Cameron Norrie achieved the most notable success of his professional journey by rebounding from a early deficit to beat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had earlier overcome Alcaraz on two separate matches, this win represents Norrie's first ever win over a reigning world No 1.

"Enormous. So big for me," stated Norrie, who is now the latest British man in history to beat a top-ranked player. "Coming back from health issues last year, I lost in the initial match of qualifiers here. I just tried to enjoy my performance in the closing months of the year. To get a triumph like this, it's the biggest success of my career, my first win over the global number one and likely the strongest athlete in the tennis scene right now."

Norrie, ranked 31st globally, also halted Alcaraz's dominant sequence of nine consecutive finals and 17 successive elite tournament successes, which represented the top run of results in the Spanish star's developing professional path.

Contest Overview

The top seed appeared to be advancing smoothly towards victory early on as he eased past the opening set. Nevertheless, Norrie gradually battled back into contention by executing with greater precision and dragging the Spanish opponent into prolonged, demanding points. His unceasing shot tolerance and dependability slowly made an impact.

For much of the battle, the world number one served well but he found it challenging to find his timing off his groundstrokes. The 22-year-old appeared particularly uneasy hitting his signature shot, which has been the most effective stroke in the game for most of this year, haemorrhaging 29 forehand miscues and a combined of 54 unforced errors. Opposing him, the British player presented his opponent minimal unforced errors, maintaining his reliability, physicality and penetration the entire contest while performing well on serve and selecting opportunities to advance inside the baseline and play aggressively.

Alcaraz, despite his remarkable accomplishments, is yet to figure out how to deliver his best tennis in indoor conditions.
