New York City Mayor Eric Adams Will Support Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race

New York City Mayor Mayor Adams declared his intention to support Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, even after an extended period of disagreements between the pair of Democrats.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations

Just last month, Adams had strongly criticized Cuomo, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and accusing him of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Nonetheless, in a new statement, Adams made a U-turn, stating he now plans to support Cuomo in neighborhoods where he holds strong support.

“I think that it is imperative to mobilize the communities of color that have suffered from urban displacement on how critical this election is,” Adams remarked.

He added, “Residents have seen their rents increase in terms of gentrification and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those communities and speak one on one with community leaders and organizations and I’m going to walk with the governor in those areas and get them involved.”

Race Dynamics and Current Developments

The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the struggle between the former governor and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has attracted attention globally and symbolized aspirations for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democratic party.

In a latest mayoral debate, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa announced they would reject the mayor's support if offered.

Months ago, the mayor had launched his bid for another term as an independent after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in return for his assistance with federal immigration raids across New York City.

During a separate media briefing on the same day, Adams answered reporters inquiring into the endorsement plan by stating, “I’ll be with Andrew later today.”

This development came a day after the two politicians were seen attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ season opener at the famous arena, which took place immediately following a heated mayoral debate.
