Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League team.

Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line

The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant boost to United’s attacking options. She has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Gathering Steam at Old Trafford

The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.

Their recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the American league, added: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
