Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Superstar and Cultural Icon, Passes Away at 81 Years of Age

Global audiences grieves the passing of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican reggae singer and actor whose distinctive vocal talent was instrumental in spreading the reggae genre across the globe. The artist has died at the age of eighty-one.

“With deep sorrow that I share that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” wrote his spouse Latifa on Instagram. “I am grateful for his family, close friends, fellow artists and coworkers who walked with him on his life’s path. To all his supporters around the world, please know that your support was his strength throughout his entire professional life … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest peacefully. I will honor your wishes.” Her post was also signed by their offspring, Lilty and Aken.

Jimmy Cliff gained fame for hit songs including You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His optimistic sound and uplifting spirit brought him a large and longstanding fanbase.

Beyond his music accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 drama film The Harder They Come, a role that was highly acclaimed and is considered a cornerstone of film in Jamaica.

Jimmy Cliff is among the select few of musicians, alongside Bob Marley and other greats, to be awarded the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
