Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD issued surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims were reported.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive this season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.
Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was expected to be a key part of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a practice session on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
