French authorities will start stopping migrant vessels in English Channel following UK pressure
French officials have consented to begin intercepting small boats in the Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy comes after the British leader wrote to the French leader asking him to back the initiative and saying there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police will be allowed to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to prevent the heavily loaded boats leaving the shoreline because it is considered too great a danger to both personnel and civilians.
"It is essential that we deploy these tactics this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police representative states personnel will start intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the spokesperson ruled out the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential technique to snarl the engines of the vessels.
This determination to intervene at all is a significant step forward, coming after a brief change towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the previous government official left office.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, in the run-up to a meeting between the UK leader and President, when French police were witnessed wading into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will again be allowed to stop boats prior to they pick up migrant passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.
Strong winds are presently postponing the start of interceptions and the human trafficking networks will be looking for methods to adapt to avoid detection, as they have done so often in the past.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
