The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
