Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Genius in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had conceded a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or did there exist a binding element holding it together to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, only for him admitted that the management had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Speculation that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized in their performances as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their initial five matches, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, observers have struggled to tell if they're getting better or self-destructing.

Matteo's Unforeseen Return

A single player continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He completed the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, Lazio were pushing for him to extend his stay a while longer. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in that campaign, all but one of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Discovering His True Position

Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to determine the exact type of the player's talent. Billed as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
