A trader made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was publicly declared, sparking debate about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the event.

Market Movement in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to President Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A single trader, which became a member in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that traders assessed the probability of the president's removal at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

But these probabilities had jumped to 11% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the early hours of the next day, suggesting a sudden change in market sentiment right before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a trade based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.

A handful of other individuals also made large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Elected officials are starting to take note.

A bill presented on recently aims to prohibit government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the past few years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports to political events.

The industry were examined under the Biden administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market industry.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
